Mode Of Action

Aminobisphosphonates act as specific inhibitors of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. They bind to the hydroxyapatite in bones.

Drug Indication Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and Paget's disease of bones
Precautions Treatment of hypocalcemia and other bone and mineral metabolism first before starting on therapy; dysphagia, esophagitis and esophageal or gastric ulcers
Contra-Indications Patients known to be hypersensitive (allergic) to ibandronic acid and other bisphosphonates
Side Effects Headache; GI disturbances; abdominal pain; rash; myalgia; flu-like illness
Dosage Orally: 50mg OD. Inf: 6 mg IV given every 3-4 weeks. The dose should be infused over 1 hr.
